At times a sleepy beachside town, Dominical is a surfing village often frequented by experienced surfers. The area attracts a variety of tourists, as accommodation venues range from tent camps near the beach, to beautiful luxury villas concealed within the hills, with incredible ocean views. The nature of Dominical and other southern towns is laidback, tranquil, and environmentally focused. There are yoga studios that offer packages and year-round retreats. The area boasts many excellent restaurants, waterfalls and swimming holes to explore, that you often find tucked away, “off the beaten path.” The annual Envision Festival of the Southern Zone brings both national and international travelers together through art and spirituality, yoga and dance workshops, live music and performance, and educational forums about environment and sustainability. The spirit of this festival seems to live year-round and reflects the culture of the zone. The Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita is a short drive from Dominical. The beaches of the national park are spectacular and from July to November, and December through March, Humpback Whale watching is an incredible experience. Whale watching is most active during the months of August-September as pregnant humpback whales migrate to the calm waters in-shore to have their calves. An internationally-recognized natural phenomenon, the main beach, Playa Ballena, contains one of the world’s most beautiful tombolos-a sand bar in the exact shape of a whale’s tail-as if the coast itself was paying homage to the gentle giants, the sand splits at low tide and the crescent reef and rock formation depicts the symmetrical curve of a whale’s tail. Visitors can walk out onto the sandbar at low tide and marvel at this beautiful natural occurence. Visitors can also enjoy the endless stretches of beach within the park and the surrounding cafes and restaurants in Uvita. If you head from Dominical towards San Isidro, you can visit the magnificent Nauyaca Waterfalls, whether hiking or on horseback, this is an activity that visitors will not want to miss. Also heading this way you can visit “Reptilandia” a zoo which, as the name suggests, features a large variety of reptiles from all over the world. Further South from Dominical, Uvita and the Marino Bellena National Park is the quaint but surprisingly cosmopolitan town of Ojochal (located approximately 30 minutes drive from Dominical). Albeit located upon a dirt road, to dine incredible world-class restaurants including Exotica and Citrus, where you will require reservations during the high season. Ojochal is an international community comprised mostly of French and French-Canadian so be sure to expect French cuisine here. If pass Ojochal and then take a left down the winding dirt road to Tilapias El Pavon, you can swim in the basin of a waterfall, where a large round stone rests overhead, balanced between two sheer rock walls. This same location features Tilapia ponds where you can catch your own lunch and bring it into the restaurant to be prepared – as fresh as it gets! Dominical, Uvita and it’s famous Marino Ballena National Park as well as the wonderful eatery-town of Ojochal are just a short-drive from Manuel Antonio and make for a wonderful day trip.
