3 Incredible Beaches South of Manuel Antonio National Park

[ess_post]

Situated along the central Pacific coast, Manuel Antonio is home to some of the most diverse sights within Costa Rica. With a close proximity to both rainforest and sea, visitors have the opportunity to get the best of both worlds without venturing too far. While the hiking trails of the Manuel Antonio National Park offer majestic aerial views and opportunities to get up close and personal with the local wildlife, it’s Manuel Antonio beach that draws hordes of tourists year after year. As one of Costa Rica’s most frequented beaches, Manuel Antonio’s crescent shaped beach offers international visitors the choice to take advantage of the crashing waves or to simply sit back and soak up the sun. And while Manuel Antonio is the “It” spot for those seeking a balance excitement and serene paradise, there’s a world of unknown beaches ready for exploring within a short drive from Manuel Antonio.

Playa Matapalo

Just off the beaten track, yet possessing an incredible and untouched natural beauty, Playa Matapalo is an escape from the typical tourist destination. Located just 20 miles South of Manuel Antonio, the endless stretches of untouched coastline are ideal for an afternoon of sunshine, swimming and a picnic lunch. Fill a cooler with some cold drinks, a good read and settle in the shade under a palm tree while you soak in the silence.

Playa Linda

Down the road from Playa Matapalo and continuing along the inner coastal highway, you’ll see an entrance for Playa Platanillo, which has been appropriately nicknamed by locals as Playa Linda, or “Pretty Beach”. Here you will turn right and make your way down a country road filled with horse farms, where dirt will eventually meet gray sand and you’ll suddenly find yourself face to face with a vast and untouched beach that seems to extend farther than what your sight permits. A favorite family meeting place for Costa Ricans on Sunday, those who enjoy enchanting beaches and great sunsets will be thrilled to divert from the larger tourist crowds and enjoy this pristine area.

Playa Ballena

To have the chance to experience an incredible natural phenomenon and a surreal view, in addition to opportunities of international cuisine along the way, make your way just further south to Playa Ballena. Located 45 minutes south of Manuel Antonio in the small town of Uvita, Playa Ballena, is a “must-see”! This beach located in the Marina Ballena National Park, was named due to it’s tombolo-a natural sandbar that forms at low tide connecting two different beaches and creating the perfect shape of a whale’s tail.

And since you’re already on the road, why not complete your road trip with a savory sensation for your taste buds?  Uvita offers some great cafes and just 15 minutes further south, the French-Costa Rican town of Ojochal is home to some of the best restaurants in the country. Happy beach hunting!
