An American travel writer once said, “Be careful going in search of adventure – it’s ridiculously easy to find.” And those of us planning awesome Costa Rica vacations immediately assume he must have been speaking of our beloved country. Sure, Costa Rica is known for it’s relaxing, laid back, Pura Vida lifestyle. But it’s also known for thrill-seeking adventures, and the truth is, adventure here awaits you, both on land and at sea. So, if you’re planning a trip here or contemplating one, here are five of our favorite tours and adventures that are sure to “wow” you!

 Ziplining and Canopy Tours

It comes as no surprise to hear our visitors say ziplining was a favorite activity during their stay. After all, the exhilarating ride above our vibrant rainforests, where sloths, monkeys and exotic birds make their homes, is quite the experience!  It’s why zipline tours in Costa Rica are often ranked among the best in the world! Whether you are in Manuel Antonio, Jacó, Dominical or the Northwestern Pacific region of Guanacaste, there is a zipline option that will be thrilling.

 Hiking Our National Parks

Marino Ballena National Park

For those who prefer to see our sights on foot, you don’t have to skimp on adventure. Our national parks have something for everyone. For example, Marino Ballena or Whale’s Tail National Park, located only 10 miles from Dominical, is mostly ocean (over 13,000 acres of ocean!) and provides an amazing look at marine life. This includes the migration of humpback whales, for which the park is named. Its four beaches offer horseback riding and scenic hikes around the mangroves. Lots of incredible wildlife live in the mangroves and you may even see sea turtles. At low-tide it provides a natural phenomenon called a tombolo, which is a sandbar connecting an island to the mainland. This tombolo forms the perfect shape of a Whales Tail and is a sight that must be seen!

Other favorite parks among tourists and locals alike are the Manuel Antonio National Park where wildlife abounds, and the Carara National Park. Home to the American crocodile, which you can see up close via some incredible boat tours!

 Sportfishing and Coastal Cruises.

Speaking of boats, if on the water is where you long to be, Costa Rica offers plenty of opportunity. The town of Quepos, which serves as the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park, is known for excellent sportfishing. And Makaira Sportfishing is the go-to luxury charter in the area for catching marlin, sailfish or even the “elusive rooster fish.”

To get the boat experience without the sport (think cocktail in hand and lounging in the sun), make plans for a relaxing cruise around Manuel Antonio’s world-famous coastline. Contact Tres Niñas Boat Rental for an incredible and private coastal tour. Or rent one of their boats and drive yourself for a truly memorable outing.

 Whitewater Rafting

Get even more adventurous on our waters when you go whitewater rafting down one of our pristine rivers. A popular excursion is on the Savegre River, also in our renowned Manuel Antonio National Park. Because the Savegre’s rapids deliver a more tame ride, this trip can be for travelers of most ages. The pace also affords you the chance to take in the beautiful views, as you make your way through our tropical paradise.

Travelers seeking a greater thrill on faster rapids, yet with the same amazing scenery, may explore whitewater rafting tours on the Naranjo or Pacuare rivers. Frommer’s named the latter among its “Top 10 Whitewater River Rafting Destinations.”

Volcano Viewing.

Arenal Volcano National Park offers an abundance of activities, including whitewater rafting, hiking and horseback riding, as well as enjoying the natural hot springs in the surrounding area. No matter which you choose, you experience the diverse landscapes and exotic wildlife of this active and exciting volcano. The Arenal Volcano National Park is convenient for those flying into the Liberia International Airport. If your travel involves the Juan Santamaría International Airport and visits in the Central Pacific regions of Jaco, Manuel Antonio or Dominical, then talk to us about an incredible day trip to the Poás Volcano.
